Plan the right trip

Use 7-9 days for one focused region. Allow at least 12-14 days to combine New York with Los Angeles and the Grand Canyon because the route requires a cross-country flight and a separate Southwest ground segment.
Timing depends on region. April-June and September-October often suit major cities and road trips, but mountain access, desert heat, hurricane season, wildfire smoke, snow, and local events can change the best choice. Check destination-specific official forecasts and alerts.
Route and transport
Do not present New York-Los Angeles-Grand Canyon as a simple linear route. Use New York as an East Coast trip, or combine Los Angeles with a Southwest road trip. Add the opposite coast only when the schedule can absorb a flight day.
| Route leg | Typical timing | Planning notes |
|---|---|---|
| New York City: 4 nights | East Coast base | JFK, Newark, and LaGuardia serve different airlines and transfer patterns. Group sights by neighborhood and use subway or commuter rail instead of crossing Manhattan repeatedly. |
| New York to Los Angeles | About 6 hours in the air plus airport and time-zone overhead | Treat this as a full transfer day. A cheaper flight from the wrong airport can add costly ground transport at both ends. |
| Los Angeles to Grand Canyon South Rim | Roughly 7.5-9 hours by car without substantial sightseeing stops | Break the drive or use Las Vegas/Phoenix as the air gateway. The South Rim has free seasonal shuttle routes, but lodging and park access should be fixed before the road plan. |
Planning costs
Ranges exclude international flights and vary widely by city, resort fee, hotel tax, parking, rental-car insurance, event dates, and park lodging. Displayed US prices may not include tax or customary tips.
| Travel style | Planning range | What the range covers |
|---|---|---|
| Value-focused | USD 160-260 per person/day | Shared budget room, public transport or divided car costs, casual meals, and mostly free sights; difficult in peak New York or park dates. |
| Mid-range | USD 280-450 per person/day | A well-located double room shared by two, taxes, tips, local transport or car costs, mixed meals, and regular paid attractions. |
| Comfortable | USD 550+ per person/day | Central or park-adjacent lodging, flexible flights, parking or rides, premium attractions, tours, and stronger dining spend. |
Compare convenience and trade-offs before choosing the cheapest room.
| Area or base | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| New York: Midtown versus Lower Manhattan | Midtown reduces first-trip sightseeing and rail friction; Lower Manhattan suits downtown sights and Brooklyn access. | Both are expensive. Midtown can feel commercial and crowded; Lower Manhattan is quieter late at night in some blocks. |
| Los Angeles: Santa Monica or West Hollywood | Santa Monica suits beach time; West Hollywood is more central for nightlife, museums, and several city districts. | Neither removes traffic. Choosing the wrong side of the city can add hours of daily driving or rideshare costs. |
| Grand Canyon: South Rim or Tusayan | South Rim lodging gives early and late access; Tusayan has services just outside the park. | Inventory is limited and expensive at peak times. Staying farther away saves money but sacrifices sunrise, sunset, and driving energy. |
Quick answers
Technically yes, but it creates two major transfer days and leaves little resilience. Twelve to fourteen days is a more realistic minimum, and one-region trips are usually stronger.
Not in New York. It is often useful in Los Angeles depending on the route and usually necessary for a flexible Southwest trip, though park shuttles cover parts of the South Rim.
Often not. Accommodation taxes, resort fees, sales tax, parking, and tips can be added, so compare checkout totals and written fee policies.
